“Theory, Identity, and Society in Lifespan Writing Research” will be held May 31-June 1, 2018 on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, USA.
Ohio University is approximately 75 miles (or 75 minutes) southeast of Columbus, Ohio's airport, John Glenn International (CMH). The inexpensive GoBus service runs a limited number of routes between the airport and Ohio University's campus. Routes to Athens and Ohio University depart the airport at 6:35 AM, 10:00 AM, and 3:15 PM. The GoBus returns to the airport from campus at 5:15 AM, 12:20 PM, and 5:40 PM. For those who are driving, Ohio University sits at the intersection of US 33 and US 50.
The conference hotel is the Ohio University Inn, located just across the river from campus. A discounted rate of $119.95 USD is available through April 25. Please note that there are very limited rooms available at the OU Inn for Saturday night, so please make your reservations quickly.
The Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, and Fairfield Inn are also options, though they are not offering a conference rate. Of these hotels, the Holiday Inn is the only one that is walkable to campus (2.1 miles). An inexpensive city bus service does connect these hotels with campus. The Holiday Inn is only a few hundred yards from the Athens Community Center stop on the regional GoBus service.
Local Travel & Parking
For those staying at the Ohio University Inn, the entire conference will be walkable for people of most ability levels.
Parking restrictions on campus are strictly enforced; however, every lot has some metered spaces that are open to the public. Baker University Center also has an underground public parking garage ($1/hour) that would be convenient to conference locations. Uptown, the city has a parking garage at the corner of Washington and College streets. Both Ohio University and the City of Athens use the ParkMobile app, although quarters are accepted everywhere except for the Baker University Center garage. Please note that the city does enforce a law requiring that cars parked on city streets be moved every 24 hours.
For those without a car, there are several other options for getting around town. Athens Public Transit operates an inexpensive bus service ($1/ride), although the schedule is limited. The campus is part of the zipcar network and is also served by Lyft and the Green Cab taxi service (740-594-7336). The beautiful Hockhocking-Adena Bikeway also connects the campus with the stores and restaurants on E. State Street (2 miles + depending on your destination).
The Athena screens art and indie films and many venues on or near Court Street have live music (especially Casa Nueva and Donkey Coffee). There are many options for hiking and biking, including Brewed on the Bikeway.
